A Sub-Orbital Spaceflight is when a spacecraft reaches space 100km from sea level and then comes back down to earth. 100km above sea level is know as Kármán line which is the edge of space. The first suborbital vehicles which reached space were the ballistic missile, It was a german V-2 on October 3, 1942 which reached a altitude of 97km. Eight years later in the 1950s the USA USSR (eastern Europe and northern Asia) concurrently created a much longer range Ballistic Missiles (ICBM Intercontinental Ballistic Missile with a range over 5,500km) which were based on the V-2 rocket. Currently there are many countries who have the ICBM.

  1. Interesting research, Matt. You explained the concept of suborbital really well and I was fascinated about the historical side to your research. However you missed out the commercial aspect of this topic.
